Orange and red alerts from the Icelandic Meteorological Office can close trails and F-roads without notice.

Road conditions
Before driving on Highland roads or F-roads, check conditions at road.is. F-roads typically open between June and September.
F-roads require a 4x4 vehicle with river-crossing capability. Crossing fords with unsuitable vehicles is the most common cause of accidents in Iceland.

ICE-SAR Shelters
Emergency shelters
Orange ICE-SAR emergency huts are spread across Iceland, including Highland roads. They contain freeze-dried food, thermal blankets and first aid kits.

Insurance
What your policy covers
Most ICE-SAR rescue operations are free for tourists. Insurance mainly matters for helicopter rescue, extended medical care and repatriation.
