Safety warning

Thingvellir is easy to visit, but it should not be treated like a simple urban park. Surfaces around Almannagja, Oxararfoss and the parking areas can be slippery in rain, ice or compacted snow. Stay on trails and boardwalks, do not approach the edges of fissures outside marked routes, and consider Silfra only with certified operators and suitable equipment.

Thingvellir brings together geology and history: this is where the Althing was founded, and where the North American and Eurasian plates visibly move apart. On a driving itinerary, it is an exceptionally rewarding stop for the time it takes.

From Reykjavik, it can be reached in under an hour along the first stretch of the Golden Circle. The area is large, so it is worth choosing your parking area in advance based on the route you want to take.

Weather & conditions

The park can be visited year-round. In winter, some areas may have ice on the trails — crampons are recommended. With fresh snow, the rift valley landscape is especially scenic and exceptional for photography.

Photography tips

The rift valley between the two tectonic plates is best photographed from above, along the upper rim trail. Lake Þingvallavatn with the winter Northern Lights is one of Iceland's most iconic subjects. For Almannagjá (the great fissure), use a wide-angle lens.

  • "Very interesting park from a natural and historical point of view, with a beautiful panoramic route between rocks, cracks and waterfalls. The path is comfortable and mostly asphalted, therefore easily practicable. The landscape is evocative, even if it loses some of its magic with rain and wind. The large waterfall is beautiful, one of the main attractions of the park. Paid parking near the entrance. Overall a pleasant and well-organised visit, even if not among the most exciting stops in Iceland."

Is Þingvellir free?

Access to the trails and park is free. Only parking is charged: currently, the fee for a standard car is 1,000 ISK per day in the park's main parking areas, payable on site or through Checkit. The visitor centre and exhibition area follow their own opening arrangements.

How much time do you need to visit Þingvellir?

For a quick visit including the Almannagjá route, 45–60 minutes is enough. For a full visit of the park (rift valley, lake, church, historic Althing area), allow 2–3 hours. It is often the first stop on the Golden Circle — it is best to arrive feeling fresh.

Can you go snorkelling or diving at Þingvellir?

Yes, the Silfra site — a fissure in the rift valley between the two continental plates — offers snorkelling and diving in crystal-clear water (visibility up to 100 m). Booking with certified operators is required.
