What are the Northern Lights? The science in two minutes

The Northern Lights are not magic — they are physics. The Sun continuously emits a stream of charged particles called the solar wind: electrons and protons travelling through space at millions of kilometres per hour. When these particles reach Earth, the Earth’s magnetic field diverts them towards the poles. In the polar regions, however, the magnetic field lines converge and open out: solar particles enter the upper atmosphere (at altitudes between 100 and 300 km) and collide with oxygen and nitrogen atoms. This collision excites the atoms’ electrons, which release energy in the form of visible light.

  • Green (the most common): atomic oxygen at 100–150 km altitude
  • Red and pink: atomic oxygen at very high altitudes (200+ km) — visible only during intense auroras
  • Blue and violet: molecular nitrogen in the lower layers of the atmosphere
  • Pure white: an overlap of several colours during very high activity

Iceland is one of the best places in the world because it lies within the auroral oval — the circumpolar belt with the highest frequency — and offers accessibility, infrastructure and an unmatched diversity of landscapes.

When to go: the right window is specific

The aurora requires two simultaneous conditions: solar activity and darkness. In Iceland, that means a seasonal window from late August to mid-April. Summer is excluded: the midnight sun does not set for long enough. The best hours each night are from 22:00 to 2:00 — when the sky is darkest and activity is often at its peak.

  • September–October: nights lengthen rapidly, with still relatively stable weather. Fewer crowds. Auroras from 15 September.
  • November–January: maximum darkness — in December the sun sets at 15:30. Intense cold but an extremely high chance of auroras.
  • February–March: often the best period. Geomagnetic activity has historically been higher near the equinoxes, the days allow for daytime excursions, and the weather is more stable.

The KP Index: understand it in five minutes

The KP Index measures the intensity of Earth’s geomagnetic activity over a 3-hour interval. It ranges from 0 to 9. Note: it is a retrospective average, not an immediate forecast. For short-term forecasts (30–120 minutes), look at the solar wind Bz parameter — when it is negative and sustained, auroras intensify.

  • KP 0–1: almost no activity — seeing anything is extremely rare
  • KP 2: perhaps a faint green band low on the northern horizon
  • KP 3: decent visibility away from lights with clear skies
  • KP 4–5: clearly visible aurora, often with movement and colour
  • KP 6–7: a major display — curtain structures, rapid movement, multiple colours
  • KP 8–9: an exceptional event, with auroras visible even from central Europe

The issue of cloud cover is often more limiting than the KP index: a KP 7 under overcast skies is worth nothing. Always check cloud cover and wind for your area before setting out.

The seven best spots in Iceland

  • Þingvellir (National Park) — The best high-quality accessible option. 45 minutes from Reykjavík, decent darkness and a reflective lake. Ideal for a first time.
  • Snæfellsnes Peninsula — The ice-capped Snæfellsjökull volcano in the background, black basalt beaches and open northern skies. One of the most photographed landscapes beneath Icelandic auroras.
  • Jökulsárlón (glacial lagoon) — The island’s most photogenic spot. Icebergs reflect and amplify the colours. Requires a tripod, tolerance for the cold and patience.
  • Diamond Beach — Just beyond the lagoon: ice fragments on black sand make an extraordinary foreground. Combine it with Jökulsárlón on the same night.
  • Lake Mývatn (North) — A unique volcanic ecosystem with geothermal steam, pseudocraters and a lake that acts as a natural mirror. Akureyri is less than an hour away.
  • Westfjords (Vestfjörðir) — The region with the least light pollution on the entire island. Remote, quiet, extraordinary.
  • South Coast (Vík–Kirkjubæjarklaustur stretch) — Black beaches, basalt stacks and open skies. Often less cloudy than the western region in winter.

Your evening routine: how to decide

The winning strategy is to have a clear evening routine to follow between 17:00 and 19:00, when you can still adapt your logistics. The most common mistake is waiting until 22:00 to decide — when nighttime roads, cold and travel make everything harder.

Night photography: settings that work

Photograph the aurora with a camera in manual mode and a stable tripod — without a tripod, forget sharp photos. Always shoot in RAW: JPEG compresses the aurora’s colour range. Focus should be set manually on a star or distant point of light.

  • Average activity (KP 3–4): ISO 800–1600 · f/2.8 or wider aperture · shutter speed 8–15 seconds
  • Intense activity (KP 5+): ISO 3200–6400 · f/2.8 aperture · shutter speed 2–5 seconds to freeze movement
  • Lens: 16–24mm wide-angle — captures more sky and more foreground
  • Smartphone: Night Mode works at KP 3+ — it does not replace a mirrorless camera, but it is impressive

What to bring into the Icelandic night

  • Layered clothing: thermal base layer + fleece + waterproof and windproof jacket. Bare fingers lose feeling in under 10 minutes at -10°C in the wind.
  • Double gloves: waterproof gloves over thin technical ones for operating the camera
  • Spare batteries: the cold halves camera and phone battery life
  • Head torch with a red-light mode (does not ruin night vision)
  • Thermos with a hot drink + high-calorie energy snacks
  • Sturdy tripod: Icelandic wind is a real force, even in winter

The mistakes that ruin an aurora hunt

  • Expecting the bright green of social media photos: weak auroras (KP 1–2) look like white-grey haze. Intense green and curtains require KP 4+. A camera always enhances colours compared with the naked eye.
  • Giving up after one cloudy evening: Icelandic skies can clear completely within a few hours. Persistence is the most important variable.
  • Staying in Reykjavík: even at KP 4, light pollution halves visibility. An hour’s drive changes everything.
  • Ignoring cloud cover: a KP 6 under overcast skies is worth nothing. Cloud cover is the decisive filter — always and before anything else.
  • Not bringing enough layers: standing still in the cold for hours is far more demanding than an active hike.
