REAL WARNING: the main hazard here is not the length of the trail, but the combination of **spray, wet rock, mud and ice** near the waterfall. Do not approach the water’s edge for a photo, and do not force the route behind the falls if the ground does not provide secure footing. In strong wind, heavy rain or poor visibility, stop earlier and reassess the visit.

A hidden waterfall beside Skógar
Kvernufoss lies in the Kvernugil canyon, just east of Skógar, within the volcanic landscape of the Katla UNESCO Global Geopark. Its appeal is not its monumental size, but the way it appears suddenly at the end of the trail: water drops into a narrow gorge enclosed by dark walls and moss, creating a more intimate atmosphere than other highly exposed stops along the south coast. The visit is short but scenic. The canyon draws your eye towards the waterfall and concentrates the sound of the water, so the experience begins before you reach the final viewpoint. Its proximity to the museum adds context. What to know before you go
Although the trail is short, it is not a scenic pavement. In recent years, the area has required management work because visitor traffic had grown and informal paths had developed; today, the main route is better defined, and stone steps have also been built near the waterfall. This does not remove the risks: mud, spray, wet rock and ice can change the experience considerably. Stay on the marked trail and treat the weather as a real part of the visit, not a secondary detail.
Getting there
From Route 1, enter Skógar and follow signs for the Skógar Museum. The trail to Kvernufoss starts from the museum/car park area and follows the canyon eastwards. Official sources place the canyon around 500 metres east of the museum and give a walking time of about 20 minutes to the waterfall. Parking is paid.

Weather matters here far more than the short route might suggest. In rain, the unpaved trail becomes muddy and rocks near the waterfall are more slippery; in frost or snow, the final section and any route behind the falls may not be sensible.
