Overview
At a glance
- Use it when you want a calmer stop than the busier waterfall nearby.
- Check the ground carefully before stepping behind the falls, because the narrowest section is also the slickest.
- Keep your phone or camera protected from spray before you enter the final stretch.
The trail starts from the Skógar museum area and runs into a narrow gorge that leads to the waterfall. The walk is short and easy to follow, but it is not just a flat stroll: the surface can turn gravelly, muddy, or slick with spray, especially near the rock wall and behind the curtain of water. The main appeal is the pacing: a few minutes on foot, a tight and scenic setting, and enough room to linger without the pressure that comes with the larger nearby attractions. It works well as a brief detour, not as a standalone day hike.

When to go
- Excellent
- Fair
From spring through autumn, the route stays short and rewarding. Summer usually gives the easiest footing, but spray still matters. In spring and autumn, mud and moisture can be more limiting than the distance suggests. In colder periods, ice can form and the passage behind the falls becomes more slippery.
