A hidden waterfall beside Skógar

Kvernufoss lies in the Kvernugil canyon, just east of Skógar, within the volcanic landscape of the Katla UNESCO Global Geopark. Its appeal is not its monumental size, but the way it appears suddenly at the end of the trail: water drops into a narrow gorge enclosed by dark walls and moss, creating a more intimate atmosphere than other highly exposed stops along the south coast. The route starts at the Skógar Museum car park, and the official walking time is given as around 20 minutes.

Why it is worth the detour

The visit is short but scenic. The canyon draws your eye towards the waterfall and concentrates the sound of the water, so the experience begins before you reach the final viewpoint. In dry, ice-free conditions, many visitors continue to the path behind the falls: it is one of the reasons Kvernufoss leaves such a strong impression, but it should not be taken for granted in every season.

A place best understood alongside Skógar

Its proximity to the museum adds context. Official tourism sources specifically suggest combining it with a visit to the Skógar Museum, which tells the story of local history, regional artefacts and how glacial rivers were crossed before bridges. If you have time, this combination makes the stop more complete and less of a simple “photo stop”.

What to know before you go

Although the trail is short, it is not a scenic pavement. In recent years, the area has required management work because visitor traffic had grown and informal paths had developed; today, the main route is better defined, and stone steps have also been built near the waterfall. This does not remove the risks: mud, spray, wet rock and ice can change the experience considerably. Stay on the marked trail and treat the weather as a real part of the visit, not a secondary detail.
